I’ve been commissioned to create a series of one-act musicals, primarily for workshop productions through New York’s Kaufman Center. Those shows are performed by young actors, but they’re not “kids’ shows.” (When my director-partner Amy Sulds brought me the tale of a man on trial for the murder of his wife, a crime for which he was convicted based on his late wife’s supernatural testimony, I said, “There’s no way we can do this with 11-year-olds...so let’s do it!”--and thus was born the first incarnation of Greenbrier Ghost.) Other subjects include the fall of Icarus (They Fly), a Biblical prophet (Yo, Jonah!) a series of folktales from around the world (Treasure Under the Bridge; For the Birds) and an original quest story (The Tale I Tell).
The shows are rehearsal-friendly, have limited scenic and costume requirements, and are suitable for either large or small casts (through judicious doubling).
